Even though I have been to Italy many many times, it’s amazing how there are still so many cities that I haven’t seen yet. One of my life goals is to see as many UNESCO World Cultural and Heritage sites as possible, and San Gimignano is one of them!
The road leading to San Gimignano had rolling hills and hay bales. It was so serene and breathtaking! We parked our car in one of the many parking lots and this was the view we saw. We stayed for a few minutes just to take it all in.
Darren and I absolutely love this walled medieval hill town not far from the Tuscan villa that we stayed at in Greve, Chianti. It is famous for its architecture and towers. When we first walked into the walled city on Via S. Giovanni, we passed by a lot of cute souvenir shops, restaurants, and pizzerias. The cobblestone streets and the blush color stone walls looked so pretty and they were perfect on film! It was such a quaint little town.
Shops and restaurants were lined along both sides of the buildings:
Every souvenir shop has very unique gifts and a lot of them are also handmade. Italians are very crafty and are true artisans!
Darren and I LOVE all kinds of pastas and we make them every Sunday night at home. OK, we cheat because we don’t actually make the fresh dough from scratch or use the pasta machine to cut the pasta. We just buy it freshly made at this grocery store near us, but it is still really good and fresh! So seeing all these different types and colors of pasta in San Gimignano makes my heart happy! 🙂
There are medieval towers everywhere we walk to…
We love these little courtyards inside the buildings, and there are flowers and potted plans everywhere:
One of the few squares in town is the Piazza Della Cisterna. It is a triangle-shaped square with brick pavement and the underground cistern at one end of it. It is surrounded by houses and medieval towers with amazing restaurants, cafes and gelato shops.
