It’s been a long time since Darren and I were in Florence (separately before we even met). We were always in awe of this beautiful city and were so excited that we got a chance to go back there together this time! And after reading the book “Inferno” and watching the movie with the same name starring Tom Hanks, it’s even more exciting to see the city a 2nd time with different eyes.
Florence is such a great walking city lined with nice stores and gelato shops. The leather goods are famous there. And if you are into gold and jewelry, you will see all those shops right next to each other on the Ponte Vecchio. They were packed!
Just a few blocks away is the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Campanile in the town center, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1982.
And just like the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris, along the Ponte Vecchio you can also find lots of padlocks that are affixed on the fences.
Piazza Della Signoria is such a great place to people watch. This famous L-shaped square is a meeting place for all local Florentines and tourists alike. The most prominent building in this square is the 14th century Palazzo Vecchio, a Romanesque fortress-palace that is the town hall of the city. It has all these statues out front and in the nearby Loggia Dei Lanzi.
We were there in the summer and it was one of the hottest days ever – 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) when we visited the town center, so it was really nice to get a cup of my favorite gelatos! Hmmm… yum!
